Art and Chichester Cathedral

 

Chichester CathedralChichester Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Chichester Diocese, covering all of Sussex, and the flagship tourist attraction for Chichester. The Cathedral has some 330,000 visitors a year and 190,000 of these are estimated to be “tourists”.

The Cathedral is particularly famous for its art, both ancient and modern. Chichester Cathedral is a magnificent building which has stood at the centre of Chichester for nearly 1000 years. A wonderful combination of the ancient and the modern, it holds a number of treasures including the 12th century Lazarus Reliefs and works by Sutherland, Chagall and Piper.

In 2008 the Cathedral celebrates 900 years since its consecration and also remembers the life and work of its famous Bishop George Bell, who died 50 years ago. These two special anniversaries will be marked by a number of events - including a diverse exhibitions programme including Transept:Traverse
