Tim Sandys-Renton

Still from 'deep sea', digital video loop 2002.
Tim works in video with the themes of ‘time’ and 'presence'. Compressed narrative is generated by a balance between opposites; i.e. motion and stillness, repetition and change, order and chaos, male and female, figure and landscape ‘etc’. In ‘Deep Sea’ the video moves from above the waves to underwater. Multiple and simultaneous images attempt to bring together choreography, sculpture and ‘painted’ image. ‘Road Movie’, which presents a perpetual journey around the USA, uses multiple screens to give an almost cubist rendering of the interior car space. We view these parallel events simultaneously, reducing the linear narrative to almost zero. Tim's works avoid ‘jump-editing’ in order to maintain a sense of continuity. The work’s sparseness works against a reading as TV, film or multi-media. The ‘loop’ makes the videos work like still images, closer to stasis than movement.
From a 1st Class BA hons at Exeter, Tim moved to the Royal College of Art. He developed sculpture using photography as a way to allude to the movements implicit in objects and possible audience interactions with objects. In 1995 Tim moved to a post as Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at UCC, then running the Fine Art BA (’97-’99), but pulled back to allow more time to make Art. Since then his work has moved into Video, allowing him to re-investigate movement. Between ‘00-‘01 he was part of the Artists Professional Development Scheme, (Education Through Art and South East Arts.)
