Where does inspiration come from, what starts the germ of an idea that becomes a finished artwork?

Unusual occurrences, found objects and even ‘normal’ everyday routine provide the starting point for many of Stephen Williams’s sculptures.

They are frequently constructed from a variety of common materials, many recycled. The juxtaposition of these materials often produces a finished outcome that often becomes more than the sum of its parts.

One major area of curiosity is exploring the relationship between machines and works of art. How related is art and engineering, can a machine ever become a work of art, can a work of art ever be practical?

Stephen Williams builds impractical machines and useless inventions, a bizarre mix of mechanical and figurative sculptures. Accepted sculptural techniques become mixed with simple mechanics to produce movement that can add many different aspects to a work; surprise, humour, or perhaps even a sense of danger!
