Layers of visual language have been the central tenet of my work since graduating from St Martin’s in 1990. The term visual language can of course be interpreted very broadly, but this is one of the aspects I appreciate about “Postmodernism”: the fact that we are no longer limited, as Artists, to make work with a single rationale. I have used found images, symbols, adapted shapes and forms as well as colour to try and communicate ideas and observations about the world, with more recent developments using text and the figure to make more direct statements. Layering of forms and colours, often by using materials in a translucent way as well as using layers of images to juxtapose and create relationships, occasionally with some purpose but often just teasing the viewer and creating visual tensions or harmonies.
