About Artel
Artel is a chichester-based group of contemporary artists who support each others practice, meet and exhibit regularly across the area.
Artel has steadily increased in profile since 1999. The achievements of the group are made up of the joint efforts of each individual. Every member has a valuable part to play. Please read these notes carefully and explore this website to find out more about our history, exhibitions and members.
Artel’s Primary Aims:
- To foster a dynamic and forward looking artistic community in Chichester, creating opportunities for dialogue and the exchange of new artistic ideas through exhibitions, discussions and events;
- To search for affordable studio space for Artel members
Artel’s secondary aims:
- To share skills and expertise with the community of Chichester by generating opportunities for Artel members to participate in residencies, workshops and community events, actively working towards raising the profile of the visual arts in Chichester;
- To raise funds to enable group activities and facilitate its management;
- To maintain an Artel web-site with information about visual arts in the area
The objectives of the Artel Studio Trust are to:
- Find and manage an affordable studio complex that matches the aspirations of the group; and research appropriate sources of funding within the private and public sector;
- Raise the professional profile of studio artists by focusing regional and national attention on the group;
- Generate exhibition opportunities for the studio artists, both locally and nationally;
- Be accessible to the community through education/workshops with adults, youth, disabled and other community groups, developing new audiences for the arts and educational links with schools, higher and further education;
- Raise the profile of the arts, locally and regionally, by engaging in public cultural events and promoting cultural/artistic exchanges;
- Act as a resource center, forging links with existing arts organisations and service providers, matching artists with artistic opportunities and so boosting employment for local artists;
- Help focus artistic attention on the city, encouraging further development of the contemporary cultural/environment.
Selection criteria for applications to join Artel:
- The type of work; This must be broadly classified as ‘visual art’ or ‘fine art’ and will not entail manufacture or batch-production methods for retail.
- Although not stylistically led, the group is likely to favour art that is contemporary and forward looking.
- Professionalism and commitment; It is not expected that members will make their living entirely from their art, but should aspire towards this.
- Support for the group, your willingness to partake in some group and community projects and possibly to instigate others.
- Dynamics of the ARTEL group itself.
- Full time students are not eligible to be members.
Successful applicants must:
- Support ARTEL’S Aims and Objectives (above).
- Accept ARTEL’S rules of membership as laid down by members.
- Partake in at least 50% of monthly meetings and vote on policy.
- Be prepared to support the group by taking a share of organisational and administrative duties as requested.
- Be prepared for all members to have your contact details.
- Pay £35.00 membership fee (due on the 1st September, and is renewable annually).
MEETINGS
- We hold monthly meetings in the first week of each month and members are expected to attend for a minimum of 50% of these.
- The day of the meetings alternates through the week. For instance if the September meeting is held on the first Monday of the month, the October meeting will be held on the first Tuesday and the November meeting on the first Wednesday and so on.
- If you are unable to attend a meeting please let one of the Directors know in advance.
- We usually have a Christmas social
- We do not meet in August.
- Venues for each meeting may vary and will be announced in the minutes or agenda monthly.
- We strive for accessible meeting places but if you have any special needs we always hope to meet them. Please contact us for information.
SUBS
- The membership fee this year is £35. Cheques made payable to ARTEL STUDIO TRUST. Our address is currently changing - please contact us by email to confirm where to send your subscriptions.
- Subs are due at the October meeting and in order to ensure prompt payment and to avoid undue administrative costs a surcharge of £5 will be imposed on late payments.
DIRECTORS
- We have 3 directors and a company secretary.
- the directors are voted in at the Annual General Meeting and normally hold office for a 3 year term.
- In addition to their legal responsibilities to the Companies House, the directors and company secretary have an overview on projects and programme.
SABBATICALS
- After membership of 2 years application can be made for a 1 year sabbatical. This may be for completion of an MA or other course of study, or special project or for personal reasons.
- Members on sabbatical pay a nominal fee of £5 to keep their membership open.
- Members requesting a longer period of absence must leave and reapply for membership. On return from sabbatical there is no guarantee of inclusion in projects already up and running.
- Members who take a sabbatical that is research based may be invited to give an informal talk and show their work to the group.
CORRESPONDENCE
- Emails have proved the most successful form of contact within the group.
- If you have no access to email please arrange to find out any necessary Artel business from another member or use this website. You can also use this website from any internet connection to contact the directors via the online form if you do not have your own email account.
MEMBERS RESPONSIBILITIES
- We publish a list of members annually detailing contact details and roles within the group.
- Members are required to respect confidentiality and not to pass on this information without prior consent. Member information on teh internet falls under the separate privacy policy.
- As and when required all members are expected to help with the administrative process of running Artel, setting up exhibitions, fund raising, social events etc..
- Informal mentoring is available by arrangement between established and new members.
ARTEL NAME & WEBSITE
- The use of the Artel name and website must be formally agreed by the Directors as must all exhibitions using the Artel name.
- All our exhibitions are curated internally in addition to any external curation.
FRIENDS
- We have a mailing list of friends who subscribe £5 a year. They are invited to our exhibitions and socials.
