Graylingwell architects present their plans for studios for artists and designer-makers.

STOP PRESS: Graylingwell architects present their plans for studios for artists and designer-makers.

On Tuesday 18th March 2008, following the Community Planning weekend sessions, John Thompson & Partners Architects presented their new indicative masterplan for Graylingwell, North East Chichester.

Including, amongst other things, a proposal for …

‘The Well’ at Graylingwell will be a new cultural hub, aiming to provide high quality cultural facilities, built around the creative industry, fine art, arts and crafts, design, makers, new media, markets and festivals, open air events, cafe and gallery, project and production space. It could provide a place for emerging talent, generating arts material, ideas and debate, discussion and dialogue and a forum for exchange. In addition, it should establish links with new and existing education provision, schools and the university.

4: Existing farm buildings will be retained and converted to studio space for artists, makers and designers, incubator units, exhibition facility and gallery space, cafe and outdoor events space for performance or cinema.

3: Water tower; a beacon for Graylingwell with potential uses (subject to further detailed investigation) could include a dark space for a new media lab, radio station, recording studio, rehearsal spaces, lighting project, climbing wall and combined heat and power plant, offices for Community Development Trust and home delivery drop-off.

2: Existing chapel converted for use as multi- use community space for local organisations, youth clubs, crèche,
day care facilities, meeting rooms and creative industry -training

5: Graylingwell farm house converted into creative office space or innovation centre with an adjacent new build office building
In order to ensure this architectural vision becomes a reality, studios4artists are setting up as a charity, will continue to refine their business plan and search for funding. Please support their efforts!!

The whole development seeks to combine existing and new buildings within a net zero carbon development, to enhance the landscape and to provide the setting for a high quality integrated neighbourhood which will serve the existing and new communities.

THE FIRST GRAYLINGWELL COMMUNITY FORUM - 6.30pm - 8.30pm, Wednesday 7th May, St Michael’s Church Hall, Summersdale Road. Everybody is welcome! This will be a chance for the community to be updated on the development of the proposals.

All the best, and watch this space …
